i just can't get past the chmod thing.

i chmod the directory to 777, to no avail. same message during install telling me to chmod.

is there any way around this?

Please post the exact message. Chance are you need to chmod a subdirectory. The error message should tell you which one.

it was the root:
To check your local webserver installation, serendipity needs to be able to write the file ".htaccess". This was not possible because of permission errors. Please adjust the permissions like this:
chmod go+rwx /home/.ekg/rambler/therambler.info/
and reload this page.

i use smartftp, and i changed the chmod for therambler.info (folder) to 777

It's possible there is already a .htaccess file in that directory which apache doesn't have permission to modify. It may not be showing up in your FTP client--if need be, try another (IIRC, WS FTP is supposed to be good)

chmod go+rwx /home/user/k/e/z/kezayi/www/slam/

The directory slam has 777 but i still have the same message.
Someone to help please
