All I get is Times New Roman. The formatting isn't working. Everything was fine. Then it turned up this way one day. A restart doesn't help.

I am not a web guy. I am a security-infrastructure guy. So excuse my terminology.

First of all, you might want to check with your web hosting provider if they made any changes recently. Most likely would be they upgraded PHP.

This is a box I host in-house.

I have ran "yum downgrade php*" until I can go no further. Reboots in between.

Okay, so we need more information. It would probably help to know the

* Serendipity version
* Apache (or other web server) version
* PHP version
* MySQL (or other database) version

you're running. Then it would be good to know if you changed/updated any of those recently, maybe even just through an automatic update mechanism of the server's OS.

I believe this was due to an auto-update. Now that I think of it, I had fixed the gateway address of the network card. That must have permitted the auto-update to start working.

Since I first posted this I tried downgrading php which didn't help. So I figured I would go in the opposite direction: update everything including the serendipity. I can't get the serendipity to upgrade to 1.6.2. I have the files copied over into the directory, but I can't initiate the upgrade script.

Currently it is a CentOS Vmware guest.

Linux 2.6.18-308.16.1.el5
Serendipity 1.5.5
Apache 2.2.3
php 5.1.6
MySQL 5.0.95

What exactly do you mean by "can't initiate the upgrade script"? When you copy the latest files to your serendipity folder, the next time you browse your site, you should receive a message with a link to start the upgrade. Do you see such a message? Do all files get copied over? Could this be a permissions problem?

OK. I retried the upgrade to Serendipity 1.6.2. It is upgraded, but still no style sheet. Still plain jane.

Your screenshot (first post) shows the backend of serendipity. Are you also lacking styles/formatting on the front end?

Files that did not verify might not have been copied/overwritten successfully... try copying just that one folder (htmlarea/) from a fresh copy of 1.6.2.

This definitely looks like a failed or incomplete update, maybe incorrect permissions (which could also explain the missing stylesheet, which probably is responsible for the blank backend).

How do you resolve those permission issues.

Since your hosting your own web server, I assume you're familiar with chmod/chown etc.?

I found the root cause: iptables. When I service iptables stop, the stylesheet works.

Any idea what entries are required in iptables to get the stylesheets to operate with iptables on?

Hi!

iptable rules can allow and deny virtually any traffic. Maybe you have a rule that forbids an IP multiple, consecutive requests - which are needed in a Webserver environment though.

I've actually never heard of iptables causing trouble like these, so your rules might simply be too strict?
