to insert a flash banner? I know css doesn't support it.
CSS is totally unrelated, you need to insert the propper HTML code either into your Smarty *.tpl template (index.tpl) or create a HTML sidebar nugget item with the HTML code.
Make sure to disable "Apply markup transformations" for that specific HTML nugget plugin.
