Thats ok!
It is the Serendipity upgrader screen which is presented, when the upgrade via autoupdate was done.
It tells you certain things and at the end you can choose to run the automatic or manual db update. Choose the automatic one and you are most possible done.

Yep, selected 'auto' on both occasions.

I'm just recovering back to the old version so I'll confirm the version I'm upgrading from. I wonder about maybe going 1.6 than 1.7 ?

Please. I do not understand what you are doing...!
If you come to the upgrader page at last, telling you about permissions etc being OK and you proceed to run the automated database updates, your are done and you don't need to recover anything.

Sorry.

What I am saying is that the upgrade\install has completed normally (as it did on my first upgrade attempt).

However when I try to log in to the admin area I get the same error message as on my first attempt, as per my opening post.

To confirm, I'm trying to upgrade from Serendipity 1.5.5 (PHP 5.2.17 - soon to be 5.3).

Ah ok, I missunderstood then.
So a PHP upgrade would be another option to get this cookie/session issue running, ... normally a PHP 5.2.6 and up should do. Talk with your ISP and read the logs as said before.

Perhaps anybody drops in pointing to another solution...?!

a php upgrade is an option. Are there any big issues with Serendipity v1.5.5 ? Is it critical to upgrade ?

ha ha - perhaps that's not one to answer in public....

A PHP upgrade could (~may) be another option to get rid of the errors you get with 1.7. You will for sure get some error notices about deprecated functions with 1.5.5.

Upgrading to 5.3 didn't make any difference, it's still giving the error when trying to access the admin area.

Not sure what to try next. :(

Hmmm, stick with the PHP 5.3 version, but talk with your ISP (*) and read the server (error) logs, as said before.

(*) describe the problem and ask, if they have changed anything that could be related to this issue.

Cheers Ian.

They want to move us to a new server shortly so I'll try again once the move is complete and go from there.

The upgrade is still failing now we've moved servers. I've asked our hosting company so will see if they can suggest anything.

If there are any suggestions from here they would be appreciated :)
