[announcement] XML-RPC Plugin with WordPress mobile support

Post by blog.brockha.us »

Hello blogger fellows! :)

The last month my betatesters and me worked on the XML-RPC plugin to make it emit and handle WordPress functions. The idea for doing this: I want to be able to manage my blog mobile. But S9Y is not that wide supported as WordPress is. You can find a WordPress client on nearly any mobile platform, but you won't find mobile clients that easy supporting the XML-RPC interfaces, S9Y implements.

If the XML-RPC interface supports WP functions, you can use all the clients out there supporting a standalone WordPress blog.

We are in a state now, that all tested clients are working! My betatesters are giving green light!
  • You can create, edit or delete articles and save them as local or remote drafts.
  • Together with the GeoTag plugin you can add mobile calculated geocoords to your articles
  • You will be notified about new comments on your mobile and are able to answer or moderate them. Together with the new Bayes version you can even learn them as SPAM (if the client supports that trigger)
  • Together with the new oEmbed Plugin I released recently it becomes easy to embed remote content like YouTube videos or flickr images using a mobile client.
Clients we have tested:
  • Official WordPress Clients on Android Phone, Android Tab, iOS Phone and iPad.
  • Blogsy on iPad.
  • MarsEdit and ecto on OS X Lion.
  • ScribeFire on Firefox.
Thanks to my betatesters Robert Lenders and Franz Steininger, who tested the iOS and Apple clients, and to Jan, who identified a main problem we had by debugging the official WP iOS client for us.

I hope, we are ready to release the new version of the plugin today (Sunday) to Spartacus. So happy mobile blogging, friends! :)

Hi Grischa

Sounds very exiting....!
Could you paste some links to screenshots here, to show what this is all about?
Regards,
Ian

Well of course.. I have some screen shots in my home blog i.e. in this post.
It's a German post, but you can see the article and comment view of the WordPress for Android client there, that is filled with a Serendipity testblog of mine:

(bigger versions of that images are found in my blog post).

What it is all about? Well, I hoped I made that clear: You can access your Serenditpity blog with any WordPress client now. As WP clients are more common than S9Y clients (I don't know any for Android i.e.) you are now able to manage your blog with a mobile WP client. Works great!

In my case I can even abandon Posterous now, that I used for mobile blogging mainly. Anything, that I liked in Posterous is available for S9Y now, but S9Y is much better supported for me (if something doesn't work I can fix it instead of being an unliked suer reporting stuff not working again at Posterous, hoping that they will accept and fix the bug in my lifetime ;)).

Love it! Thanks to Grischa for your efforts! Seems to be working pretty good and I've been waiting for such a solution for a ling time.

There is still one question remaining, though. Is there any way to access my media library from within the iOS Wordpress App or Blogsy for iPad? I couldn't find a way to.

You are welcome, it was fun creating this. :) (and I was missing this a lot, too)

About accessing the medialibrary: I'm not sure.. Is there some functionality in the named clients allowing this? The WP Android client doesn't have something like that.
If your clients have something like that, we can check out, what methods the client is calling when trying this.

But it should be possible at least, to create and edit posts with images, uploaded to the media library together with the post (we've tested this with success at least).

Btw: Someone is testing the WP Blackberry client at the moment with the new interfaces. We already found some problems while testing. I hope we will have this client working soon, too. I will update the plugin again when done.

No, there doesn't seem to be an option for accessing the media library in those clients. I just thought I was missing something. :-) It just would have been a nice option since I have a lot of images in my library which I use quite often. But I understand that this is a limitation of the used clients. Thanks again!

Yes, AFAIK there is not even an interface defined for reading / using images from the media library (in WP or any other blog interface..)

I really would like to have that, too, but I see no way for it (except from building a special s9y interface and client, what we don't want I think).
