[Recaptcha] reCAPTCHA v2

Post by thh »

Google seems to have updated Recaptcha:
Dear Webmaster,

You're receiving this email because you're registered as a website
administrator for a site that uses reCAPTCHA.

Google launched reCAPTCHA v2 (i.e. No CAPTCHA reCAPTCHA) in Dec, 2014. The new version provides a more simplified user experience than reCAPTCHA v1, with an enhanced spam fighting mechanism.

Action requested: please upgrade your site implementation to reCAPTCHA v2.

Please refer to the developer guide for integration details. We hope you enjoy the new reCAPTCHA.

Thank you,

reCAPTCHA Support
Perhaps someone can find the time to "upgrade [the] implementation to reCAPTCHA v2". :-)

It seems recaptcha v2 is a complete rebuild; there's an official PHP5 library which should be usable.

Implementing it into the s9y plugin should be analog to recaptcha v1. So actually, this should be a straight-forward thing to implement, for which one wouldn't even need to know too much PHP or even much about Serendipity. Read: A great opportunity for someone to spend a few hours with trying to read up on everything an implement. Doesn't that sound fun and challenging, and a great way to give back to the community? Anyone reading this is heartily welcome, I'll try to help where I can if you have questions.

Or, you know, just run your blog with s9y spamblock plugins and don't use a pesky CAPTCHA at all. It's a hassle for all your users (not just the blind people) anyway.

True. Yet the new Captchas just feel right ... an interesting alternative approach to the whole "spell it" business.
Ah and the Spamblock Plugin throws errors when assigning non-english sames to the comment fields through the comment form input field with dynamicform.tpl. That might be due to the lack of assigning individual labels to input fields.

On upgrading: Well the step-by-step description on reCaptcha.net/Google is somewhat cryptic -- at least i sort of miss the point what actually has to be changed compared to rC1 to "upgrade".
just a list what has to be replaced if youre already running RC1 would be helpful.Any chance to get the RC plugin updated to support rC2? That is at least not such a hassle like rC1...

Since we have Spam BEE, there is no need to use other Captchas or Spam Shooters any more. I use it for nearly ~2-3 years now, singulary in front of core spamblock, and never got any (automatted) SPAM pass through. It is the most effective and less consuming workload tool we have.

But it would still be nice to have someone keep this GC thing plugin up2date, see Garvins jingle!

Ian
