Please add additional download link

Post by Lux »

Hi!

Please add https://github.com/s9y/Serendipity/archive/2.0.zip as additional download link.

It can be used with wget or curl.

Cheers

Why not? Because this is not the release! It is a git checkout and may be broken. And which includes several files and dirs not to be included in a official release (and has no integrity checks). The ones wanting the bleeding edge of a certain release and can't wait to have this, do know this, I assume.
Why don't you use the Serendipity autoupdate? Its a minute take. I've done this often (even with 2.0) and it is working well. Currently you just need to set it to beta, to get the official 2.0 release.

Ian

In this case we should use tags for stable releases and include the appropriate links.

Or we should have stable branches and development branches, which I already suggested.

Simply because I am responsible for more than one blog (there are about 15) and I want to automate the update.

Back to my question:

I like to get a link, which can be used with curl or wget and which does not result in (sometimes endless) redirections.

Which one should I take?

Cheers

One of these http://www.s9y.org/12.html, or since being more directly eg: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/projec ... ror=switch (I have done this with wget several times without problems before.) or http://downloads.sourceforge.net/projec ... ror=heanet

The other thing is with github. We can add attached files to tags already. I did this for you with the 2.0 zip examplewise, see https://github.com/s9y/Serendipity/releases/tag/2.0.0

@Garvin, shall we do this with the others too? It takes massive space though and might not be a good idea to do with every tagged release.

And Dirk maybe this is a task for Metatron... I don't know... so get in touch with mattsches.

Ian

The bad thing is that the tagged one is a bit older than the released attached file, because of some last minute changes. So the X commits to master since this release is true for the tagged, but not for the green release zip.

It did not work for me in every case. This is the reason for asking.

And, to be honest, I would be glad if we get rid of Sourceforge. There is no benefit in using it anymore or do I miss something?

This is exactly what I wanted to have. Thanks a lot.

Please help me, because I do not understand. Creating a tag does not use any space in Git, apart from linking a name to a commit.

Good idea as well.

What about removing the tag and creating a new one?

Yes I know. I was a little worried about uploading attached file zips, which can one day or later scratch our limit for free usage! (I don't know if they are counted though.)

Did you really try this with the two examples for direct download links? These are more than the offered http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/php- ... p?download link on http://www.s9y.org/12.html, which gets redirected to allow mirror handling on SF side.

I think GitHub creates the zip files on the fly and caches them for a period of time.

Not the ones I am talking of, which I uploaded manually and are the green zip releases. The light grey ones are git ckeckout, done automatically.

Ok, back on track now.

Do we need the green ones?

If it is a matter of traffic, I have a root server with unlimited bandwith and 1 GBit/s uplink (located in Switzerland, but I think that does not matter).

It would not be a big issue to create a Virtual Host for download.s9y.org (or whatever the name should be) or recent.s9y.org.

Hmmm, ... there are people asking for this, please read http://board.s9y.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=20235 ff

Garvins packages each release by scripts and by hand and puts them up to SF - this is what you get on the Serendipity download page. This is what I added to the tag (green zip).

For all other questions regarding your offer or tagging new the 2.0 release, we should wait for Garvin to join in.

Ian

:-)

I am asking because GitHub offers archives for tags, which are created without manual intervention.

What makes them different from the tagged "releases"?

But I assume they cannot target what Garvin has to do to make a release file zip.
Lux wrote:What makes them different from the tagged "releases"?
Checksums, permissions checks, excluded files and dirs, touched by one person only and "etc"...

Ian
